Vampire Diaries: when did the Vampire get so sexy?
For such a corpse-cold customer, the vampire seems to be sizzling hot these days. Not just hot, but drop-dead sexy (or is that undead sexy?).The Vampire Diaries is the latest tv show to depict the vampire as sex symbol, not creepy old guy in a cape and a receding hairline. These aren’t your parents vampires!
Executive producer Alan Ball’s stylish vampire series, “True Blood,” stumbled a bit right out of the graveyard gates. But the HBO show gradually found its bat wings during its fledgling season and now is gliding through a bloody terrific second year.
Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series continues to be a titanic teen sensation, with “Eclipse,” the third movie based on her books, about to start filming. Johnny Depp has signed with Warner Bros. to play vampire Barnabas Collins in a big-screen version of the 1966-71 supernatural soap opera, “Dark Shadows.”
And at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, the CW will premiere “The Vampire Diaries,” based on the young-adult novels by L.J. Smith and produced by screenwriter Kevin Williamson (“Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer”).
Although these paranormal projects are designed to appeal to different audiences, they have one thing in common. Each features at least one hunk-appeal vampire far closer in spirit and style to David Boreanaz’s darkly heroic “Angel” than Max Schreck’s rodentlike Orlok in the 1922 silent-screen masterpiece “Nosferatu.”
Not bad for a creature who started in myths and legends as a repugnant predator and loathsome leech. Think about recent vampire series, from the short-lived CBS drama “Moonlight” to the Lifetime show “Blood Ties.” The undead characters looked more like they had just stepped out of the pages of GQ magazine than the dungeon crypt of a castle.
That’s also true of Bill Compton, the “True Blood” vampire played by Stephen Moyer. That was true of Boreanaz’s Angel, as well as Alex O’Laughlin’s Mick St. John on “Moonlight” and Kyle Schmid’s Henry Fitzroy on “Blood Ties.” And it will be true of the vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon Salvatore, played by Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder on “The Vampire Diaries.”
It certainly is no mistake to say that the vampire has made the remarkable jump from monster to sex symbol. But it is a mistake to say that vampires have all of a sudden become hot.

I’m really looking forward to The Vampire Diaries.
It’s true, vampires have evolved. First Anne Rice brought up the concept that they could be angelic, beautiful creatures.
Then along came other authors, having a crack at vampires, changing ings, bringing in new ideas. Until we have vampires like these. And they will most likely change still.
I’ve read all l. j. smith books and I must say that they’re really cool. Sometimes not great or even good, but cool… When the TV Show was prepared, they made a lot of changes, specially to Elena, who was supposed to be a blue-eyed blonde teen and now is a brunette. Anyway, I think the TV Show will have the main story on it. Which’s a good thing. As for vampires being hot… well, that’s just the evolution. I guess that a few years ago people saw a man in dark clothes and freaked out with fear, nowadays is a different thing. I mean in our society, sex is an important thing and if vampires are supposed to attract people, they won’t do it if they have a scary look right? Is much easier if they’re amazingly beautiful and sexy. To me that’s it… LOL

Louis started off in a book published in 1976 and written by Anne Rice. The movie Interview with the Vampire came out in 1994.
Angel made his first appearance in Buffy in 1996.
So, my point is: saying that ” david boreanaz started the entire hot hunk brooding vampire trend” is incorrect. Your opinion may be that David is hotter than Brad but Louis and Lestat (book) were melting people’s hearts and stirring up hormones first. In Anne Rice’s Vampire Crons is were we first start to truly see our more modern vampire.. the vampire we sympathize with and root for and fall head-over-heals in love with. Vampires with souls, emotions, dreams and inner-conflicts.

Anybody who knows how to read would know the concept of vampires being seductive isn’t a knew one — Buffy certainly isn’t the start of this craze.
It starts with books, people. Geez.
I believe that the classic vampiric story “Carmilla” (much, much older than any of the ones menstioned above) also shows a very seductive sexy vampire. Although vampire are said to be horrible creatures and all, the “sexy” vampire thing was always thare. In legends vampires would seduce their victims
surely the whole point of vampires is to be seductive.
therefore, portrayal of todays vampires are sexy, brooding, male-model types, as this is what our society finds attractive.

terra is right: vampires are symbols of sex. Biting the neck… and that vein in the thigh, liking virgins, only coming out at night, visiting you while you sleep. These aren’t new inventions to the vampire myth: they are our ‘parents” vampires as the author of this article puts it. However, he is right that there is a difference, they have been hollywoodised, but not for sex appeal but to make them nicer and safer, so they can be the heroes not just the sexy baddies. Personally i prefer the sexy baddies…

The concept of vampires as studly seducers is older than the hills, y’all.
I think what appeals to people about vampires is that they promise eternal devotion.
A vampire will Always be there for you No matter what. Another thing:Vampires do not get old,sick,ugly and they never die. Considering there is a 60% divorce rate in this country I think these seductive creatures fill a need on some level. Plus theres that whole immortal love vibe.

I watched one time Vampire Diaries, but I don’t liked. I prefer True Blood, Buffy and Angel. Besides, the vampires on Vampire Diaries are not so hot and beautiful than Angel and Bill.
